Best office headset?

In our experience, cost is not always the best way of choosing a headset, that is not to say, that some really cheap office headsets are just NOT worth the few pounds paid for them!

Even though the world’s major office headset manufacturers like Plantronics and Jabra create very good products, there are still some lesser known makes which do a great job at a reasonable price for an office headset.

laptop headsets

Essential information on choosing the best laptop PC headset based on your personal requirments. Headset4business specialise in all types of Laptop PC Computer headsets, stocking all the worlds best selling headsets.

As the Laptop computer becomes even more of an essential business tool, we find ourselves working remotely more often or even using a Laptop permanently in the office. It’s no surprise that the demand for wireless and corded Laptop headsets continues to rise as the manufacturers bring out more and more models to ensure your communications in the working day are more productive.

Connecting a headset to a Laptop PC

To connect a headset to a Laptop is usually via the USB port, in the case of wired headsets, the bottom cable of the headset has a hard  wired USB end so just “Plug n Play” really. Although you can connect via the Sound Card too, this is common in the Skype and Domestic end of the market.

The wireless headset often uses a USB dongle, a simple device which looks like a memory stick which communicates with the base station and charger of the headset.

How do I choose the correct laptop headset for me?

“Wired or Wireless”?

This choice still comes down to personal preference and as always, cost! The advantages of wireless headsets speak for themselves really.

Advantages of a wireless Laptop headset are:

  1. Hands free,
  2. Convenience – no wires to fall over
  3. Range – You can roam away from your laptop or PC (up to 100m+)
  4. Lightweight and comfortable (although this can also be said of wired headsets too!)

Disadvantages are:

  1. Cost is usually higher althought the gap is now smaller with more and more purchasing wireless.
  2. Repairs, consequently are higher if required (life of a wireless headset is 2-3 years if using every day Mon-Fri.
  3. Sound quality can be slightly impared than wired headsets as there is a digital connection, rather than a wired one to your computer (but this is less and less with the latest models in our opinion)
  4. The headset relies on a battery for powering it (but so do Laptops if being used remotely!)

Wired or Corded headsets for your Laptop PC

Advantages are:

  1. Technology is sound and tested (80% of the market is wired or corded)
  2. Cost is often less expensive
  3. relatively inexpensive to replace if needed
  4. Build quality is often more robust and so withstands more knocks and falls etc
  5. No battery required as its powered by the laptop directly

Disadvantages are:

  1. The main one is freedom to move, as you are connected to your laptop by a wire with about 2m of length, although it varies depending on the brand. Obviously convenience is affected when using a wired headset.

plantronics Savi Office 200 USB wideband headset

Welcome to the new Plantronics Office range consisting of the Savi Office 100 and 200 (this review) headset.  Another case of Jabra and Plantronics going  head to head with gadgetry and design, both bringing out similar spec models like the Jabra 6470 USB headset and I have to say, they both have provided quality products.

At a glance, the Plantronics Savi Office 200 is a USB headset, so ideal for all your IP telephony requirements and it is according to Plantronics, optimised for Microsoft Office Communicator software. Noise cancelling is very good and our test also gets top points for voice quality too.

like lots of the new bread of USB headset, the Savi office is a wideband headset which ensures the clarity in voice transmission (both ways)

Would we buy it? Yes definitely, especially useful for the sales executive who needs a headset to work on there desktop phone and or PC etc

headset 4 business gives this Plantronics Savi office 200 a 5 star rating

Wideband headsets, quality and technology from Jabra and Sennheiser

Monday, February 1st, 2010

Take me to the wideband headsets now

As the major headset manufacturers move closer and closer to true HD sound quality, it is well worth a look at the latest wideband headset offerings from Jabra and Sennheiser. True wide band headset sound is, according to the powers at be, is 4,000 Hz but certain headsets like the Jabra GN2000 noise cancelling USB headset provides a massive full frequency response at over 6,500 Hz which ensure a greater call clarity.

What is Wideband and how does it affect headsets?

Simply, when you are using any kind of IP or other Unified Communications telephony platform, then the wideband frequency is required in the headset  to ensure that call volume, call quality is transferred across the “etha” as clear as possible.

Existing non wideband (narrow band) headsets do not provide the above quality and so new wide band headsets are now being introduced at a rapid rate from the headset manufacturers. They are available in both wireless and wired wideband headsets and vary in price and quality dependant on the telephones you are connecting to.

Why does the type of phone matter when connecting a wideband headset?

In our experience, some IP telephones seem to be “outside” the normal technology despite the manufacturers telling us otherwise. We have had cases where some IP phones will work better on standard headsets than they do on wideband, so its worth checking with us first! It may save you some money.

What is the cost of a wideband headset?

Costs vary dependant on manufacturer, if it is a one ear (monaural) or two ear (binaural) headset and the features available on each headset but £80 to over £200 would be a fair estimate.

USB headsets, the future of PC telephony?

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

With the advent of IP or VOiP telephony ever increasing across the UK business market, it is no big surprise that headset manufacturers have increased their range of USB headsets. More and more businesses are opting for PC based phones or “Soft Phones” with screen dialling and often backed up by the ever increasing Unified Communications platforms that are prevalent in larger businesses. USB headsets are changing the way we do business and like the traditional “plug in phone” headsets, they are very well made. The technology has had to be adapted and even re-invented to a degree, to make up for the voice clarity and call strength. The headset giants Jabra GN Netcom and Plantronics, along with others like Sennheiser and Altesys have embraced the opportunity to increase their USB headset ranges and tap into this lucrative market.

So which headset connected by USB is the best choice for you?

Well, there are so many quality and cost effective headsets out there that it’s a difficult choice to make. The new Jabra Biz 2400 USB headset has caused quite a stir amongst its rivals by replacing the existing GN2000 and GN2100 range which was so well made and trouble free. The new Biz is far superior due to the advance in technology increasing the call quality, decreasing noise reduction and designing a very comfortable modern headset.

Plantronics are fighting back with the ever popular Supraplus USB headset but have also introduced the new Plantronics Savi business 100 200 range that is stylish and quite a trend setter offering a high end price but with quality to match.

Watch this space though as other manufacturers realise the market is huge and is growing all the time, we have already seen the first quality sub £100 wireless headset from Doro make its mark and USB headset prices will be the ones to watch as we move closer to Unified Communications and IP telephony.

Plantronics versus Jabra GN Netcom

Have you ever wondered how Headset giant Plantronics stacks up against their main rival in the headset market “Jabra” owned by GN Netcom? Well quite well really. Its no secret that the vast percentage of UK Call centres use and have always used Plantronics H251 and H251N (the ‘N’ is noise cancelling) headsets as they are robust and well priced for such a big market but Jabra have the GN2000 and GN2100 which are extremely well made and well priced.

As a supplier of many brands of both wireless and wired headsets, it has always surprised us that people nearly always stick to what they know without trying new models or even new brands like Sennheiser or Altesys. The plain truth of the matter is that Jabra create very well made, well designed and cost effective headsets that are arguably much better in sound quality than some of the Plantronics range.

The wireless headset revolution has set the “cat amongst the pigeons” and the “gloves are off” in the wireless war, as all the headset manufacturers race to get the best and most cost effective DECT cordless headsets out to market. Plantronics have always done well with the CS60, arguably the most popular Plantronics wireless headset but Jabra also have the GN9120 to match it; and match it, it does, in both quality and price.

Both Plantronics and Jabra have recently brought out a whole series of high end office headsets targeting the business managers and office executives that are looking for headsets that set them apart and have an aesthetic charm. Plantronics with the wireless and super trendy Savi range and Jabra with its Go range going for looks and quirky every time hoping to corner that market.

So what happens to every day, robust, well  made and still wired varieties of headset? Well, Jabra have released the Jabra Biz 2400 to eventually replace the GN2000 and even the GN2100 which are excellent headsets but you cannot argue with the new technology in the Jabra Biz range with even better sound clarity and wait for it! Kevlar coated headbands for extra strength.

Who is best, Plantronics or Jabra Gn Netcom? The decision is as always, Yours!
